Dear voters of
District 66,
For the last eleven years I have had the special privilege of representing District 66 and working to make Mississippi a better place to live for all of us.
As a member of the Municipalities Committee I have helped:
- Pass legislation to clean up neighborhoods
- Fund initiatives to fight crime and promote economic development

As Chairman of the Education Committee I have worked:
- To lower the drop out rate
- To improve the high school graduation rate
- To fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program
- To increase financial and academic accountability in our schools
- To pass a charter school bill
- To eliminate
smoking at school events
- To return physical education and health
education to schools
- To increase rigor in the classroom
- To shine the spotlight on low performing schools
- To pass the historic "Children First Act"
- To pass the Mississippi "anti-bullying" act
- To require suicide prevention training for
teachers
- To raise teacher pay
- To improve asthma treatment for students
- To improve opportunities for vocational training
- To hold school superintendents and boards more
accountable for their actions.
As a member of the Appropriations Committee and
Joint Legislative Budget Committee I have worked for:
- Balanced budgets
- Reduced spending
- Increased accountability for all state agencies
- Passage of a comprehensive Administrative Procedures
Act
- Inclusion of Internal Auditors on the staffs of all
major state agencies
- Passage of increased taxes on tobacco
In addition to bills for which I have been the principal author, because of my seniority in the House, I have also had significant input on a number of other bills.
Several of particular importance to the citizens of my district dealt with:
- State funding to repair a portion of Jackson's
antiquated water and sewer systems
- Proposed development of the old Blind School property
- State support for the Old Capitol Green project
- Merger of the Convention Center board and the
Telecommunications Center board
- An appropriation to support additional police and
street paving for Jackson
As we move into the next four years, I want to use my experience to continue working for the voters and taxpayers of my district. My priorities will continue to be:
- Improving the quality of life in Jackson
- Improving our educational system – kindergarten through college
- A conservative balanced budget
- Increased government efficiency and accountability
- Increased funding for law enforcement
- Economic development opportunities
- No increases in sales or income taxes
- Working to improve employment opportunities for
Mississippians
- Support for our statewide system of health care
In this effort I would very much appreciate your support. It has been an honor serving the people of District 66 the last
eleven years. Thank you for the opportunity to be your state representative.
